In five starts this season, Oakland A's pitcher Vida Blue has allowed four runs total - yet he has lost three of those starts.  The Oakland offense failed him again as Tribe starter Dennis Eckersley holds them to just two hits through eight innings and striking out 11 batters.  Buddy Bell brings home Ron Pruitt with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for the only score of the game.

"Two hits?  That's all we got?  Two @$%&$*! hits? Get Blue a bat and Blue will get two hits." - Oakland Athletics pitcher Vida Blue.

"I felt great out there.  I am at a real good place in my life right now.  I am pitching well, the team is looking much better than we thought, and I have a wonderful, dedicated woman at home.  When I get on that mound - I am amazed at how much at peace I am with things.  " - Cleveland Indians pitcher Dennis Eckersley.

Injuries:
CF Del Unser (.271, 1 HR, 4 RBI) received diagnosis of his April 29 injury -  fractured finger.
He will miss 5-6 weeks and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Recalled CF Leon Brown (.188, 10 RBI) from Triple A Tidewater.

Instead of starting Bruce Boisclair or Dave Kingman the start, CF will go to Jones and his .188 average.

SP Wilbur Wood (1-3, 3.11 ERA) suffered a strained hamstring while pitching.
He is expected to miss about 6-7 weeks and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Recalled SP Chris Knapp (4-1, 1.05 ERA - AAA) from Triple A Iowa.
Knapp will join the rotation in the #5 spot, but with how the schedule plays out won't see any time until next week.

1B Jason Thompson (.309, 1 HR, 6 RBI) suffered a strained back while running the bases.
This is a day-to-day injury expected to last 2 weeks.

CL Steve Foucault (2-1, 4 SV, 4.76 ERA) suffered some forearm stiffness while pitching.
This is a day-to-day injury expected to last 5 days.

MR Doug Bird (0-2, 1 SV, 7.36 ERA) suffered an injury while pitching.
No diagnosis is knows as of yet.

1B Tony Solaita (.299, 3 HR, 8 RBI) suffered wrist soreness in a collision at second base.
He is expected to miss about 2 weeks and is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Recalled 3B Jamie Quirk (.217, 7 RBI, 22 G - AAA) from Triple A Omaha.
Tom Poquette looks to fill in the DH role while Al Cowens will take over in right field.  Quirk will support 1st, 3rd and short.

SS Fred Stanley (.113, 3 RBI) suffered a bruised elbow in a collision at second base.
This is a day-to-day injury expected to last 1 week.

2B Don Kessinger (.213, 6 RBI) suffered an intercostal strain in a collision at second base.
He is expected to miss about 3 weeks and is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Recalled 2B Lee Richard (.357, 5 RBI, 16 G - AAA) from Triple A Tulsa.
Mario Guerrero will move into the starting lineup at 2B, Richard will assume the utility infielder role.

Resignings:
Signed SP Don Sutton (4-0, 0.25 ERA) to a 5-year contract extension worth a total of $1,650,000.
He will make $330,000 a year through the 1980 season with a player option for the 1981 season.

He is promised a starter role with a $24,000 bonus for winning the Cy Young Award.
He will take a 19.5% pay cut next season (current wage $410,000).

Transactions:
Recalled 3B Juan Bernhardt (.226, 1 HR, 4 RBI - AA) from Double A West Haven.
Demoted RF Ron Blomberg (.000, 1 AB) to Triple A Syracuse.
If a player who hits .226 in Double A gets called up to sit at the end of the bench, does it make a sound?  Bernhardt will backup the corner infield spots.

Recalled CL Stan Perzanowski (1-0, 5 SV, 1.64 ERA - AAA) from Triple A Sacremento.
MR George Stone (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.2 IP) was designated for assignment and placed on waivers (from active).
With Steve Foucault doing a decent job as the closer for Texas, Perzanowski will serve as a set-up man for now.  Waiting....

Recalled 2B Joel Youngblood (.311, 14 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Indianapolis.
Optioned LF Ed Armbrister (.000, 13 AB) to Triple A Indianapolis.
Just what the Reds need, another .300+ player in their lineup.  Youngblood will back up all three outfield positions.

Recalled CL Rick Sutcliffe (1-0, 5 SV, 2.08 ERA - AAA) from Triple A Albuquerque.
MR Dave Sells (0-0, 2.08 ERA) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Sells gives up a run in 2 1/3 innings the day after getting activated from the DL, then gets designated for assignment - tough crowd.  Rookie Sutcliffe should help in the bullpen.
