Quote(s) of the Day
"To me, age is just a number.  I have plenty of years in this arm so I am not hung up on people saying I am on the downside of my career.  Barring any serious injury, I can see myself pitching another six, seven or eight years.  219 victories is nice, but I am gunning for 300." - Texas Rangers pitcher Gaylord Perry.

"Plenty of years in his arm?  Ha!  More like plenty of @$#% on his arm...and hat...and glove.  All I've got to say is this.  The @#$&%$! ball is practically dripping when he throws it.  You know something is up when (Rangers catcher Bill) Fahey has to wipe his hand off every time he throws it back to the pitcher.  The whole side of his pants is soaked." - Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Gorman Thomas.

Injuries:
SP Doug Rau (1-0, 0.91 ERA) received diagnosis of his April 28 injury -  fractured finger.
He will miss 5-6 weeks and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Activated MR Dave Sells (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G) from the disabled list.

Dennis Lewallyn will join the rotation while Sells joins the middle relief crew.

MR Ken Frailing (0-0, 1.29 ERA) suffered a mild shoulder strain.
He will be out for 3 days.
This will make the bullpen shorthanded as they have a game on Saturday followed by a doubleheader on Sunday.

Resignings:
Signed C Johnny Bench (.194, 1 HR, 7 RBI) to a 6-year contract extension worth a total of $2,270,000.
He will make $330,000 in 1977 - $350,000 in 1978 - $368,000 in 1979 - $388,000 in 1980 - $408,000 in 1981 - $426,000 in 1982
He will receive a 21.0% raise over the course of the contract (current wage $352,000).

Signed SP Rick Reuschel (1-3, 4.30 ERA) to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $150,000.
He will take a 15.4% pay raise next season (current wage $130,000).

Transactions:
Activated 2B Rennie Stennett from the disabled list.
2B Tommy Helms (.295, 1 HR, 4 RBI) was designated for assignment and placed on waivers (from active).
Not sure what a guy had to do to keep a job in the bigs, but as loaded as the Pirates are there is no room.  Stennett to start at 2B - backed up by Ed Kirkpatrick.
