Quote of the Day
"I'm not Irish and I'm not a flower child or anything like that.  But when a rainbow appears while you are on the mound, you do get a sense that something magical is in the air.  Do I think fairies made my fastball better?  No, my stuff is nasty enough on its own.  But this is New York and I have heard alot of weird stuff goes on in this town so it wouldn't surprise me to see a unicorn or two." - Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Bruce Kison.

Injuries:
2B Mike Tyson (.250, 2 RBI) suffered a hamstring strain sliding into second base.
He is expected to miss about 4 weeks and is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Recalled SS Mario Guerrero (.220, 2 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Tulsa.
Guerrero may see a little time in the starting lineup against lefties but otherwise will backup the infield.

Bill Freehan (.304, 1 RBI) suffered a torn thumb ligament during a collision at second base.
He is expected to miss about 2 weeks and is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Recalled C John Wockenfuss (.222, 1 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Evansville.
Newly recalled Bruce Kimm will be the starter with Wockenfuss spelling him every 10 games or so..

Extensions:
Signed CF Paul Blair (.438, 1 RBI) to a 2-year contract extension worth a total of $460,000.
He will make $218,000 in 1977 and $242,000 in 1978
He will receive a 112.8% raise over the course of the contract (current wage $113,700).

Transactions:
Optioned C Milt May (Did Not Play) to Triple A Evansville.
Recalled C Bruce Kimm (.182, 22 AB - AAA) from Triple A Evansville.
May must truly feel neglected.  Bill Freeman gets injured and Detroit promotes two other catchers while sending him down.

Optioned SS Tom Veryzer (.400, 5 AB) to Triple A Evansville.
Recalled 2B Gary Sutherland (.600, 2 RBI, 5 AB - AAA) from Triple A Evansville.
Sutherland will mainly be a backup at second, but may see some action as a defensive replacement.

Optioned MR Joe Kerrigan (Did Not Play) to Triple A Denver.
Recalled SP Dan Warthan (1-1, 1.72 ERA - AAA) from Triple A Denver.
Warthan should be welcome to the rotation with Clay Kirby moving to the rotation.

Optioned LF Nate Colbert (.000, 1 AB) to Triple A Denver.
Recalled RF Larry Biitner (.188, 2 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Denver.
Some say the Biitner demotion was a wake up call.  Others say it was a mistake.  He's back in the bigs and backing up 1B and CF..

Optioned 1B Hal Breeden (Did Not Play) to Triple A Denver.
Recalled SS Pepe Frias (.133, 2 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Denver.
Montreal will take Frias and his buck thirty-three average and pray none of their infielders get hurt.

SS Jack Heidemann (.000, 1 AB) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Recalled CF Lee Mazzilli (.333, 3 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Tidewater.
Mazzilli probably won't steal much time from Del Unser, but will be used as a pinch runner.

MR Gary Gentry (Did Not Play) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Recalled MR Rick Baldwin (0-0, 7.72 ERA - AAA) from Triple A Tidewater.
Sources are saying that Baldwin will be used in the later innings while Tom Hall will see more action in the middle.

Optioned MR Dave Wehrmeister (0-0, 18.00 ERA, 1 IP) to Triple A Hawaii.
Purchased the contract MR Danny Frisella (Did Not Play - AAA) from Triple A Hawaii.
Apparently Frisella was too busy working on his tan in Hawaii to actually pitch.  He will be used in middle relief in San Diego.
