Sutton Shocked By Koosman and Mets

Player of the Day
Jerry Koosman
New York Mets 3, Los Angeles Dodgers 1
WP: Jerry Koosman (1-2, 3.86 ERA) / LP: Don Sutton (5-1, 1.02 ERA) / Bob Apodaca (5, 4.00 ERA)

It took him five starts, but New York Mets starter Jerry Koosman finally gains his first victory of the season as he throws eight innings of two-hit baseball against  the Los Angeles Dodgers and previously unbeaten Don Sutton.

Bud Harrelson was the only offense New York would need as he hits a two-run single in the second inning and followed by a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The outing marks the first game this season that Sutton has not pitched all nine innings as he has pitched 44 out of possible 45 innings.

Quote(s) of the Day
"Ever since I lost my last start, Seaver has been sending slump busters up to my room every single night.  It was fun at first, but apparently it's hard to find decent looking females here in San Diego because I think the one last night had a moustache.  Now maybe I can get some rest." - New York Mets pitcher Jerry Koosman.

"We know here in New York that Jerry is a hell of a pitcher - you guys seem to forget that.  I'm just glad he got his @$%!& act together and started pitching like we know he can.  Maybe the rest of these so-called professionals will follow suit.  Oh and Jerry?  You don't @$%& with a winning streak." - New York Mets pitcher Tom Seaver.

"Crap." - fatigued New York pitcher Jerry Koosman.

Injuries:
1B Bob Watson (.275, 3 HR, 16 RBI) suffered chronic back soreness after a collision at home plate.
He will miss about 4 weeks and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Purchased the contract of 1B Jesus de la Rosa from Single A Dubuque.

Someone in the Astros organization must be high on de la Rosa to get the call up straight from Single A.  Don't expect him to see playing time - Greg Gross will move to 1B with Leon Roberts starting in RF.
