Quote of the Day
"Here's the deal.  Everyday all I see in the papers is that this pitcher did this or that pitcher did that.  Well it's about time you guys gave a hitter some ink for once.  It is a known fact that pitchers have the advantage in the spring and that it is only a matter of time that the hitters catch up.  Well guess what?  This guy just caught up." - Oakland Athletics centerfielder Claudell Washington.

Injuries:

1B Willie Montanez (.273) suffered a viral infection.
He is expected to miss about 4 days

SP Jim Lonborg (1-0, 0.00 ERA) received his injury diagnosis from April 13 - torn rotator cuff.
His is expected to miss 6 months and is placed on the 60-day disabled list.
Purchased the contract of MR John Montague (0-1, 6.75 ERA - AAA) from Triple A Oklahoma City.
Wayne Twitchell looks to be the one that moves into the rotation.  Montague joins the middle relief corps.

MR Dave Sells (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 IP) suffered an oblique strain during a pregame meet and greet.
He is expected to miss about 2 weeks and is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Recalled MR Dennis Lewallyn (4 G, 1.59 ERA, 2 SV - AAA) from Triple A Albuquerque.
Sells was injured shaking hands with a young bodybuilder named Arnold something-or-other.  Lewallyn will work middle relief for LA.

CF Fred Lynn (.400, 3 RBI) experienced some knee soreness sliding into second.
He is expected to miss about 1 day/

Extensions:
Signed MR Ron Bryant (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 IP) to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $55,390.
He will receive a 31.0% raise next season (current wage $38,200).

Transactions:
1B Jim Spencer (0-1, 1 G) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Recalled 1B Carlos May (.364, 1 HR, 5 RBI - AAA) from Triple A Iowa.
May will start at 1B, Lamar Johnson moves to DH, Jack Brohamer goes to 3B, and Bill Stein goes to the bench hitting .296,

MR Blue Moon Odom (Did Not Play) was designated for assignment and placed on waivers (from active).
Recalled MR Larry Monroe (2 G, 1 IP, 1 SV - AAA) from Triple A Iowa.
Monroe will take the spot of Odom in middle relief.  Some are saying that Blue is seeing red.

CL Bob Murphy (1 G, 0.2 IP, 1 SV) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Recalled MR Tom Buskey (Did Not Play - AAA) from Triple A Toledo.
Dave LaRouche takes over as closer, Buskey goes to the set-up role and Jim Kern to middle relief.

Optioned MR Fred Beene (Did Not Play) to Triple A Toledo.
Recalled SP Rick Waits (0-1, 4.32 ERA, 8.1 IP - AAA) from Triple A Iowa.
Beene and Waits merely trade spots - Waits to middle relief and Beene to cold and yucky Toledo.

RF Ron Blomberg (Did Not Play) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Recalled CF Elliott Maddox (.167, 6 AB - AAA) from Triple A Syracuse.
Did Blomberg make the team out of spring training on a bet?  Maddux will back up LF and CF.

Optioned RF Lou Pinella (,294, 2 RBI, 17 AB) to Triple A Syracuse.
Recalled 3B Juan Bernhardt (.211, 1 HR, 3 RBI - AA) from Double A West Haven.
Otto Velez will now be the everyday DH, Bernhardt will spell 1B and 3B, and Sweet Lou gets demoted for playing too well.

CF Mike Adams (.000, 1 AB) was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
Recalled 3B Wayne Tyrone (.240, 4 RBI, 25 AB - AAA) from Triple A Wichita.
Do not expect Tyrone to make a big splash in the bigs...or even a tiny ripple.

Optioned SS Ivan de Jesus (.000, 3 AB) to Double A Waterbury.
Purchased the contract of SS Rick Auerbach (.308, 1 RBI, 13 AB - AA) from Double A Waterbury.
Ivan, we hardly knew ye.  Auerbach is your new starting SS with Tom Sizemore still the backup.

Optioned RF Leron Lee (Did Not Play) to Triple A Albuquerque.
Recalled RF Henry Cruz (.545, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 22 AB - AAA) from Triple A Albuquerque.
Cruz will start in CF with manager Tom Lasorda moving Davey Lopes in to 2B from CF and forcing Sizemore further back on the bench.  Poor guy.

2B Tony Taylor (.000, 2 AB) was designated for assignment and placed on waivers (from active).
Recalled RF Bobby Tolan (.235, 3 RBI, 34 AB - AAA) from Triple A Oklahoma City.
Tolan is versatile, backing up both 1B and CF.  Whether he turns versatility into performance is quite another story.

Optioned RF Jack Clark (.000, 2 AB) to Triple A Phoenix.
Recalled SS Johnnie LeMaster (.412, 3 RBI, 17 AB - AAA) from Triple A Phoenix.
LeMaster will look to see some at-bats as backup for most of the infield.

Optioned 2B Vic Harris (.000, 1 AB) to Triple A Tulsa.
Recalled 2B Mike Tyson (.259, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 27 AB - AAA) from Triple A Tulsa.
Tyson will start at 2B, Don Kessinger will move over to 3B and Hector Cruz will move to the pine to backup 2B and 3B.
