Player of the Day
Gaylord Perry
Texas Rangers 3, California Angels 0 - Game Two
WP: Gaylord Perry (3-2, 3.03 ERA) / LP: Frank Tanana (5-3, 1.88 ERA)

Suspicion is nothing new to Texas Rangers starter Gaylord Perry.  Over the course of his career, Perry has been accused on numerous occassions of throwing a "spitter", or doctored baseball but has never been ejected for the act.  So when Perry overcomes three Texas errors to hold the Angels to five hits in a complete game 3-0 shutout - complaints again began to resurface.

"You cannot tell me there was nothing on that ball.  It was practically spraying stuff on the way to the plate.  When the damn catcher has a towel in his chest protector to keep his hands dry, you know something is up." - California right fielder Bobby Bonds said after the game.

Texas was led by designated hitter Gene Clines (.435), who goes 4-for-5 and Roy Smalley (.287) adds two more hits, including a double as the Rangers blank California, 3-0 to split the afternoon doubleheader.

This is the third consecutive complete game for Perry and his fifth of the year, leading Texas sixth victory in their last seven games.

"It's funny after all of these years people still think I throw a doctored baseball.  I have been checked countless times and never have been found guilty.  If I had anything on me that would be considered illegal, don't you think they would have found it by now." - Texas pitcher Gaylord Perry.
