Cubs Reuschel Tosses Masterpiece

Rick Reuschel of the Chicago Cubs shakes off the disappointment of his first two starts to not only punish the Montreal Expos with his arm, but also hurt them with his offense as Chicago rolls to a 12-0 complete game shutout in front of 13,868 in the first game of a four game series at Wrigley Field.

Reuschel (1-2, 4.50 ERA) yields just four hits on the day with five strikeouts on the mound and also scores three runs and goes 2-for-4 at the plate to help send the Cubbies to their third win in a row.

"I take a certain pride in my hitting. I'm not the greatest by far, but I am getting better. I hit my first home run last year and had the ladies lined up after the game. I want more of that - they don't do that for shutouts or 10 strikeout games. Chicks dig the long ball."

Jose Cardenal (.257, 1 HR, 4 RBI) drives in four runs with a two-run double and a two-run home run, Rick Monday (.281, 6 RBI) triples and scores three times, and Pete LaCock (.304, 5 RBI) delivers a two run triple in the Chicago victory.

Los Angeles starter Don Sutton (1-1, 1.50 ERA) strikes out seven and allows four hits in getting his 111st complete game of his career but the Dodgers lose to Houston 2-1 in front of 21,294 in the Astrodome. Ken Boswell (.476, 3 RBI) triples home Jeff Davanon in the sixth inning and scores one batter later on a sacrifice fly for the game-winner. After getting a hit in his first seven games, Ron Cey (.412) goes hitless for the third straight game.

The San Diego Padres bats fall silent today as Houston starter J.R. Richard (2-1, 4.58 ERA) allows just three hits and strikes out seven en route to his first shutout of the season, 3-0 in front of 21,663 fans at the Astrodome in the first game of an afternoon doubleheader. Manager Bill Virdon continues to be impressed by the 26-year old.

"He is amazing to watch. He is so tall and hides the ball so well - when he delivers, he is already halfway to to plate. His desire actually scares the hell out of me. He is the kind of guy that would throw at his own mom if she managed to gets a piece of one of his pitches."

Bob Watson (.235, 7 RBI) collects a triple and single, driving in two of Houston's three runs while scoring the other himself while Cesar Cedeno (.378) extends his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-4 performance for the Astros.

San Diego starter Bill Strom (0-1, 2.28 ERA) strikes out seven in the complete game loss.

Texas pitching has a combined 1.89 ERA with eight wins and five saves - league leaders in each. Mike Cubbage (.242, 2 HR, 8 RBI) hits a two-run home run and Toby Harrah scores a pair of runs, his fifth consecutive game in which he scores at least one run.

Al Bumbry (.250, 1 HR, 1 RBI) also hits a solo shot while Ross Grimsley (1-1, 4.70 ERA) gets his first complete game of the season for Baltimore. Joe Rudi (.188, 1 HR, 7 RBI) and Tommy Harper (.211, 1 HR, 3 RBI) both go deep for the Athletics in the loss.

Detroit (1-4) at California (4-4)
The Tigers use a three-run home run from Mickey Stanley (.313, 1 HR, 4 RBI) off of California closer Dave LaRouche (0-1, 1 BS, 6.75 ERA) in the top of the ninth inning to give Detroit a 4-3 comeback win. Ben Oglivie (.286) delivers a trio of singles and starter Ray Bare (1-1, 4.50 ERA) gets the win, conceding three hits, but walks four while allowing three earned runs. The Angels manage just four hits in the game, but still lead 3-1 going into the ninth thanks to starter Frank Tanana (3.20 ERA), who strikes out eight over 8 1/3 innings.

New York (5-3) at Pittsburgh (5-1)
Tom Seaver (2-1, 2.52 ERA) holds the Pirates to just three hits while striking out six through eight innings while Del Unser (.241, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 SB) goes 4 for 4 with a triple and a solo home run as the Mets hand Pittsburgh a 4-1 defeat. Pirates starter John Candelaria (0.90 ERA) leaves the game in the second inning with an apparent elbow injury.

Los Angeles (4-4) at Atlanta (2-5)
Frank LaCorte (1-1, 6.97 ERA) of the Braves walks seven, but only lets one cross the plate as Atlanta prevails over the Dodgers, 4-1. Darrell Evans (.217, 2 HR, 3 RBI) hits a two-run home run and Tom Paciorek (.321, 4 RBI) adds a double and two singles to pace the Braves offense. Los Angeles starter Tommy John (1-1, 2.78 ERA) goes the distance in the loss.

San Francisco (2-6) at Cincinnati (7-0)
Giants pitcher John Montefusco (1-2, 4.19 ERA) silenced the Pete Rose-less Big Red Machine, striking out seven and allowing one unearned run in a 10-1 pounding of the Reds and giving them their first loss of the season. Giants players Bobby Murcer (.303, 2 HR, 5 RBI) hits a three-run homer and drives in four runs on the day, Ken Reitz (.240) adds three hits, and Darrell Thomas (.395, 5 RBI) goes 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Joe Morgan (.303) scores for Cincinnati, the fifth straight game he has done so.

Philadelphia (2-3) at Chicago (3-4)
Led by the pitching of Steve Stone (1-1, 4.15 ERA), the Cubs finish off a two-game sweep of Philadelphia with 4-1 triumph. Stone goes eight innings, giving up six hits and one run to hold Chicago at bay while Manny Trillo (.219) has three hits with a triple and Jerry Morales (.350, 5 RBI) drives in three runs to lead the offense. Phillies RF Jay Johnstone (.304) hits a pair of doubles while starter Jim Lonborg (0-2, 3.38 ERA) strikes out five in the complete game loss.

Montreal (2-4) at St. Louis (2-4)
Cardinals starter John Denny (1-1, 2.55 ERA) gets his first win of the season as he holds Montreal to five hits and two runs (one earned) in a 6-2 St. Louis victory. Garry Templeton (.259, 7 RBI) drives in four runs for the Cards as five of the ten St. Louis hits are two-baggers - all off Expos starter Steve Renko (0-2, 8.18 ERA). Pete Mackanin (.192, 1 HR, 1 RBI) is one of the few Montreal bright spots, hitting a home run to lead off the game.

San Diego (5-4) at Houston (4-5) - Game Two
Cesar Cedeno (.415, 8 RBI) continues his torrid hitting with three hits, but none as important as his second double of the day in the top of the eighth inning as Houston defeats the Padres 3-2 and sweeps an afternoon doubleheader. Cedeno eventually scores the winning run when a ground ball from Enos Cabell skips off the glove of San Diego SS Bill Almon (his 1st error). Astros starter Larry Dierker (3.20 ERA) goes seven innings, striking out five while giving up seven hits and two runs (one earned), but gets a no-decision. Johnny Grubb (.265, 4 RBI) has a double and a pair of singles in the loss.

HOT: Cesar Cedeno (HOU) - 15 for 29 (.517), 9 Runs, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 5 SB, 1 BB in last 7 games.

Injuries:

SP John Candelaria (1-0, 0.90 ERA) left the game with an elbow strain. Team officials expect him to be out about 2 months and he is placed on the 60-day disabled list.
The team purchased the contract of SP Rick Langford (1-1, 1.08 ERA in A) from Single A Charleston. He will work in the bullpen while Doc Medich will move to the rotation.

C Bob Davis (.250, 2 RBI) suffered a mild hip strain in his last game. He is listed as day-to-day for about the next 4 days, but does plan to continue backing up Fred Kendall.

Rau Shuts Out The Braves
Dodgers starter Doug Rau (1-1, 4.02 ERA) walks five, but keeps Atlanta to just four hits as Los Angeles beats the Braves on the road, 6-0. Rau also does it with his bat, hitting his first career home run and driving in two runs on the day. Rau had plenty to say about his performance.

"My stuff was pretty good today. I was a little off with my control, but I was just wild enough that they didn't know if the pitch was going straight down the pipe or in their ear. Even their mascot was looking a little nervous out there. The home run was a fluke. It took me into my fifth season to finally hit one - I may not hit another in my career - or until I face Rau again."

Roger Moret (0-2, 3.86 ERA) only allows two hits through 6 2/3 innings, but three walks along with errors by Lee Lacy (his 3rd in CF) and Ken Henderson (2nd) account that account for two unearned runs prove to be his undoing. Moret wasn't going to pass the blame, however.

"These things happen, what are you going to do? Lee (Lacy) has only played a handful of games in center, but he is playing his butt off every single time the ball is hit. I made my share of mistakes out there, the least of which is letting their pitcher tee one off on me. He hasn't come close to hitting that pitch the entire game, but sure enough we I needed an out, he closes his eyes and connects."

Fergie Jenkins (2-0, 0.50 ERA) allows five hits and one run while striking out four as the Red Sox crush Chicago 12-1 for their third win in a row. Carl Yaztrzemski (.391, 2 HR, 9 RBI) hits a three-run home run, scores three runs and drives in four while teammate Butch Hobson (.133, 6 RBI) has four runs batted in as well in the win. After defeating Kansas City on opening day, the White Sox have now dropped six straight games.

Minnesota outhits the Yankees 8-4, but loses the game as New York starter Rudy May (1-0, 0.55 ERA) holds them scoreless through eight innings while striking out five. Three errors by the Twins (two by 3B Dave McKay) cost them an unearned run, but it is a solo home run by Graig Nettles (.219, 1 HR, 3 RBI) that provides all of the offense the Yankees would need. Minnesota starter Jim Hughes (1-1, 3.45 ERA) gains a complete game, but also a loss - allowing four hits and two runs (one earned).

Baltimore (0-5) at Oakland (2-4)
Reggie Jackson (.045, 1 HR, 2 RBI) comes through on his promise of getting a hit in his next game as he blasts a two-run shot in the fifth inning that proved to be the game winner in the Orioles 4-2 victory over Oakland. Baltimore 2B Bobby Grich (.167, 1 R, 2 RBI) adds a solo home run, Doug DeCinces (.190) hits a double as part of a three hit day, and starter Wayne Garland (1-1, 0.50 ERA) strikes out seven, allowing just four hits and two runs in the win. A's starter Paul Mitchell (0-2, 3.71 ERA) goes the distance in the loss, striking out seven Baltimore hitters.

Paul Hartzell (1-0, 0.79 ERA) throws seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits as California takes a 2-0 win over the Tigers in front of 20,959 at Anaheim Stadium, giving the Angels their third consecutive win. Detroit rookie starter Mark Fidrych (0-2, 2.25 ERA) throws his second straight complete game loss, allowing five hits and both earned runs.

Milwaukee (1-4) at Texas (6-1)
Texas starter Bill Singer (2-0, 1.62 ERA) extends the Rangers winning streak to five games after their 2-0 victory over Milwaukee. Singer gives up four hits through eight innings, striking out two and walking while Brewers pitcher Jim Colborn (0-2, 4.80 ERA) goes 7 2/3 innings, surrendering six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four.

Cleveland uses an eight run seventh inning to send the Royals to a 11-3 defeat and their third in a row. Montreal scores all of their runs in the first inning, thanks in part to a three-run home run by Tim Foli (.261, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and an RBI double by Jim Lyttle (.118, 1 RBI).

San Francisco (2-5) at Cincinnati (6-0)
Cincinnati continues to roll with a 7-2 win over the Giants despite losing Pete Rose in the first inning. Just one pitch after giving up a leadoff home run to Ken Griffey (.484, 1 HR, 6 RBI), San Francisco starter Rob Dressler (1-1, 9.00 ERA) nails Rose in the back - causing both benches to empty as Rose charged the mound. Griffey would also hit a double as part of a three hit day while starting pitcher Fred Norman (1-0, 1.59 ERA) not only gains a complete game victory - giving up nine hits and two runs while striking out five - but he also rips a two-run double to help his cause.

Philadelphia (2-2) at Chicago (2-4)
Bill Bonham (1-0, 1.62 ERA) goes the distance for the Cubs, conceding two runs on six hits in handing Philadelphia a 4-2 defeat at Wrigley Field. Bill Madlock (.333, 4 RBI) has three hits, including a two-run double that gives Chicago the lead they would never relinquish and help the Cubs break a three game losing streak. Phillies starter Steve Carlton (1.74 ERA) leaves the game in the third inning for what is later revealed as a mild abdominal strain.

San Diego (5-2) at Houston (2-5)
Cliff Johnson (.231, 2 HR, 5 RBI) hits a two-run home run and drives in three runs on the day as the Astros beat San Diego, 7-3 in front of a home crowd of 22,197. Texas Rangers starter Nelson Briles (1-1, 4.26 ERA) gets his first win of the year, holding the Milwaukee Brewers to just two hits in a 11-0 blowout. Briles strikes out five and walks two in the complete game victory, giving the Rangers (6-1) their fourth win in a row and sixth in their first seven games.

"After my first start (in which he gave up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings), I just wanted a little redemption. Thankfully we were playing the Brewers who couldn't even score at one of our finest Texas lady establishments. It gave me the confidence to go out and pitch strikes."

Bill Fahey (.429, 7 RBI) goes 4-for-5, hitting two doubles and a pair of singles to drive in four runs and score three himself. Randy Jones (2-0, 2.12 ERA) allows just five hits and one run as he guides San Diego to a 4-1 triumph over the Astros. Cliff Johnson (.167, 1 HR, 2 RBI) has three of five hits by the Astros and scores their only run with a ninth inning solo home run. Houston 3B Enos Cabell (.083) goes 0-for-3 for the day and has just one hit in his last 21 at-bats.

Morgan Leads The Machine
In Cincinnati's 7-4 win over the Braves, the Reds amassed 16 hits, but it seemed as if only one man could drive them home. Joe Morgan (.286, 2 HR, 10 RBI) breaks out of a 2-for-15 (.133) slump with a four-hit performance that brings in six Cincinnati runs and extending their undefeated season to five games. Morgan put this game among the greatest in his 13-year career.

"I've had some big games, but none of them were quite like tonight. It just seemed like I had runners on every time up. (Braves starter Phil) Niekro was certainly not at his best, but that knuckler is always a tough pitch to hit."

Niekro (0-1, 2.81 ERA) did struggle, allowing 13 hits and five runs (four earned) in eight innings, including a three-run home run to Morgan in the third inning. And while his famous knuckleball did strike out five Reds batters, he also walked five as well. Atlanta manager Dave Bristol praised his 37-year-old starter, even after his sub-par performance.

"You would have thought that we would have learned to stop throwing the guy strikes after awhile, but no, not Knucksie. It's that stubbornness that makes him such a great pitcher. Tonight though, he just kept looping those knuckleballs right into his wheel house. It didn't matter really, every time he got up to the plate, we had runners all over the place. It was just a tough game all around."

Vic Correll (.571, 1 RBI) goes 3-for-4 with a double and two singles for Atlanta in the loss.

After tying the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, New York SS Roy White (.214, 7 RBI, 2 SB) does in again in the 16th, driving home pinch-runner Ron Blomberg to give the Yankees a 7-6 victory over the Twins. Mickey Rivers (.344, 5 RBI, 5 SB) goes 6-for-9, hitting five singles and stealing three bases in the win. The loss overshadows the efforts of Dan Ford (.414, 4 HR, 9 RBI) of the Twins, who hits two home runs and Rod Carew (.393) who triples and singles in the loss.

Chicago (1-4) at Boston (4-1)
Steve Dillard (.444, 9 RBI) has three hits and drives in both Boston runs while Rick Wise (2-0, 0.71 ERA) allows just one hit over five innings to give the Red Sox a 2-1 win over Chicago. A 70-minute rain delay kept Wise off the mound in the sixth but did not cool off Dillard, who RBI triple in the seventh inning was the deciding run. White Sox 3B Jack Brohamer (.235) hits a double and two singles as Chicago loses their fourth straight.

California (1-4) at Kansas City (4-1)
Hal McRae (.250, 1 HR, 3 RBI) hits an RBI double and a two-run home run, but it is not enough for the Royals as they lose a slugfest to California, 8-6. Nolan Ryan (1-1, 4.20 ERA) gets his first win of the season, but struggles - allowing six runs on six hits and five walks, but still managing eight strikeouts. Tony Solaita (.286, 1 HR, 1 RBI) also homers for Kansas City in the loss.

California (1-3) at Kansas City (3-1)
Royals starter Dennis Leonard (1-1, 1.13 ERA) allows five hits and one run over eight innings as Kansas City runs off four consecutive wins with a 4-1 victory over the Angels. George Brett (.364, 4 RBI) hits a double and triple while Hal McRae (.190) also triples as the Royals send Frank Tanana (0-2, 3.18 ERA) to his second loss of the season.

St. Louis (1-3) at Pittsburgh (3-0)
The vaunted Pittsburgh offense was kept silent as Cardinals starter Lynn McGlothen (2-0, 0.50 ERA) throws a complete game, four-hit shutout and a 6-0 victory. Keith Hernandez (.412, 3 RBI) hits a triple, two singles and scores three times while Jerry Mumphrey (.375, 2 RBI, 1 SB) comes within a home run of the cycle as St. Louis hands the Pirates their first loss of the season. McGlothen has both of the Cardinals wins so far this season.

New York (4-1) at Chicago (2-3)
With two outs and two runners on in the top of the 12th inning, Dave Kingman strikes out for the fourth time in the game. but reaches first when the ball gets away from catcher George Mitterwald. One batter later, Ed Kranepool (.440, 3 RBI) delivers his fourth single of the game to give New York a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Chicago starter Ray Burris (1.00 ERA) allows just five hits and one run through nine innings while striking out eight while Jon Matlack (0.50 ERA) goes eight innings for the Mets, allowing six hits and one unearned run. Neither factor in a decision.

Philadelphia (1-2) at Montreal (1-3)
Tom Underwood (1-0, 0.00 ERA) goes 7 1/3 innings for Philadelphia, giving up just five hits in a 3-0 win over the Expos. Underwood adds a two-run double to his effort and Jay Johnstone (.357) hits a pair of doubles as the Phillies hand Montreal their fourth straight loss. Steve Rogers (1-1, 1.50 ERA) goes the distance for Montreal in the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five.

The Montreal Massacre
Led by six runs batted in from Dick Allen (.364, 1 HR, 6 RBI) and five RBI from Larry Bowa (.455, 1 HR, 6 RBI), the Philadelphia Phillies crushes the Montreal Expos 19-4 in front of 25,017 at Jarry Park. Allen has three hits on the day - including a three-run blast in the first inning while Bowa was almost as potent, hitting a three-run blast of his own as well and a two-run single as part of his three hit day. Allen attributes the output from Bowa to a little heathy competition between teammates.

"I think Larry gets a little jealous of me when I am on a roll. I caught him stewing over there on the bench when I hit that shot in the first. I went over there and told him not to over think things. Their pitchers were pitching batting practice out there and he just need to see ball - hit ball."

Bowa however saw things a little differently.

"I think Dick gets a little full of himself sometimes. Yeah, I was ticked - but certainly not because of him. It was because (Ellis) Valentine made a hell of a play in the gap and robbed me of extra bases. Dick can think what he wants, but I am hitting the ball alot better that he is and he can't handle it."

Greg Luzinski (.364, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB) scores three runs and drives in another four runs - two of which comes on his second home run of the season while Dave Cash (.286, 2 RBI) hits a double and two singles. Twins starter Bert Blyleven (2.81 ERA) goes eight inning in a no-decision, allowing one run one seven hits while striking out three while Bill Campbell (1-0, 1 BS, 4.50 ERA) redeems himself for letting in the tying run in the ninth to get the win. Pat Kelly (.412, 3 RBI) has four hits in defeat for Chicago.

Oakland (2-3) at Texas (4-1)
Led by Len Randle (.280, 1 HR, 4 RBI) who scores three runs on three hits - including a triple and a solo home run - the Rangers beat Oakland 10-4. Jim Fregosi (.316, 1 HR, 5 RBI) also homers for Texas, Toby Harrah (.278, 6 RBI) hits a bases-loaded triple and starter Jim Umbarger (2-0, 1.76 ERA) strikes out six in seven innings as the Rangers win their third straight game. Phil Garner (.208, 2 SB) is the lone A's bright spot, hitting a pair of singles, a triple and stealing a base.

Thanks to the starting pitching of Larry Dierker (1-1, 4.26 ERA), who throws a complete game shutout, Houston gets a 5-0 victory over the visiting Giants in front of 20,415 at the Astrodome. Cesar Cedeno (.400, 6 RBI, 4 SB) has three hits in the win, including a double, while stealing a pair of bases. San Francisco does pull off a rare triple play, as Bob Watson lines to third with runners on first and second and the Astros attempting a double steal. Giants third baseman Ken Reitz catches the liner, tags Greg Gross on the way to third and tosses the ball to second baseman Derrel Thomas for the easy tag on Cedeno.

San Diego (4-1) at Los Angeles (3-2)
Los Angeles scores three runs in the fourth inning on a bases-clearing double off the bat off John Hale (.313, 6 RBI), then holds on for a 3-2 victory over the Padres as Don Sutton (1-0, 1.13 ERA) allows just three hits and one unearned run in eight innings. San Diego threatens in the ninth - down a run with the bases loaded and two outs, but pinch-hitter Willie McCovey grounds into a fielders choice at short to end the game.

Orioles Lose - Jackson Still Hitless
Catfish Hunter (1-1, 3.95 ERA) holds Baltimore to four hits and one run in a complete game effort while Chris Chambliss (.429, 2 RBI) scores a pair of runs in leading the Yankees to a 4-1 win. Unfortunately for New York, the story of the day belonged to Orioles outfielder Reggie Jackson, who went 0-for-4 on the day and is now hitless in his first 18 at-bats. Listening to Jackson however, you would be hard pressed to see any added pressure on the 29-year-old.

"Reggie just wants the fans of Baltimore to realize how important Reggie is. When Reggie doesn't hit, this team doesn't win. Don't worry, Reggie proved his point - without Reggie, this team can't get it done. Reggie will hit tomorrow...and this team will win."

Jim Palmer (0-2, 3.50 ERA) not only gets his second consecutive complete game allowing the four runs on six hits while striking out five, but also his second straight loss as the Orioles lose five in a row. Ken Singleton (.353, 1 HR, 1 RBI) scores the only Baltimore run with a solo shot as he collects half of the Orioles hits with two. Unaware of Jackson's comments, Baltimore manager Earl Weaver had this to say when informed.

"He said what?!? Reggie @##$%; better learn to keep his @!$% mouth shut or Reggie will be @#$!%&* not hitting from the end of the bench!"

Detroit starter Vern Ruhle (1-0, 1.13 ERA) allows just one run and six hits over eight innings as the Tigers get past Milwaukee by a 2-1 score. Gaylord Perry (2-0, 2.04 ERA) gets his first complete game of the season and 237th of his career while Jeff Burroughs (.294, 1 HR, 3 RBI) collects his first home run of the season in the win.

Pittsburgh scores 10 runs in the third inning on five hits, 4 walks and three errors while cruising to a 14-1 crushing of the Cardinals. Cey Continues Torrid Hitting
Los Angeles third baseman Ron Cey continues to bash opposing pitchers as he goes 3-for-3 today, hitting his third home run in two days in an 8-6 loss against the San Diego Padres. In his first four games of the 1976 campaign, Cey has amassed 10 hits in 16 at-bats (.625), and leads both leagues in hits, home runs and batting average.

"I read an article during the offseason about how eating lima beans improves your concentration as well as your eyesight. I've been eating so many of those things it's like the ball is coming at me in slow motion."

Dodger pitching faltered today however, as starter Doug Rau (0-1, 9.45 ERA) walks six in route to giving up eight runs (seven earned) in just 6 2/3 innings. This, just one day after newly acquired Andy Messersmith allows six runs in four innings. Los Angeles manager Walter Alston wasn't in much of a mood to talk about his struggling staff, but did have plenty to say about Cey.

"While he is hitting the ball well, you don't want to be around him after he has eaten those damn beans. I mean, I've been around some gassy people in my 64 years, but that guy can clear the room in a heartbeat. There is a reason we call him "Toxic"."

Yankees starter Ken Brett (1-0, 2.25 ERA) strikes out seven over eight innings, sparking New York to a 5-2 win over the winless Orioles. Sandy Alomar (.385, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 SB) hits a solo home run while teammate Sparky Lyle (1 SV, 0.00 ERA) moves into a tie for sixth place with Don McMahon in career saves with 153. Reggie Jackson goes 0-for-3 and remains hitless in the four games this season (0-14).

Oakland (2-1) at Texas (2-1)
Bill Singer (1-0, 3.12 ERA) of the Rangers isn't at his best, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five and Mike Cubbage (.214, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hits a solo home run as Texas gets a 5-3 victory over the A's at Arlington. Joe Rudi (.250, 3 RBI) hits a pair of doubles for Oakland in the loss.

San Francisco (1-2) at Houston (0-3)
Willie Montanez (.188, 1 RBI) and Dave Rader (.267, 4 RBI) each hit RBI singles in the top of the 10th inning to win, 6-5 and send the struggling Astros to their fourth straight loss. Cesar Cedeno (.250, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 SB) hits Houston's first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning, and just the third extra-base hit for the team in 1976.

Injuries:

Washington Our For Season
In the top of the first inning of a game between Oakland and California, Claudell Washington looked to break up a possible double play by sliding hard into second and a leaping Jerry Remy - causing his helmet to fly off in the process. Unfortunately, the knee of Remy caught Washington flush near his temple, causing the Oakland right fielder to crumple in a mass on top of the base.

It seemed like a routine force out at second. Until Washington failed to move.

"I knew my knee hit something hard, but I had no idea what it was. I was lucky to be in the air where there was give - it just sent me flipping. Sure my knee is a little sore, but I can't even begin to think of what he is feeling right now." - Angels second baseman Jerry Remy

Washington was conscious as he was carted off of the field and was taken to local Mercy Hospital for further testing. Speaking after the game, team trainer Augusto Foreiro revealed that Washington did indeed have a concussion and initial reports indicate no lasting damage.

"However, with injuries with the head area, recovery takes some time. I can safely say that due to the location of the injury and the force of the impact, we will not be seeing Claudell in a game for the remainder of this season. I hope I am wrong."

Chicago's Wilbur Wood (0-1, 0.82 ERA) strikes out eight in 11 innings, but back-to-back, two-out singles by John Mayberry (.250) and Fran Healy (.200, 1 RBI) with a runner on in the top of the 11th brings in the winning run for a 3-2 Kansas City victory and a doubleheader sweep.

Gary Ross (1-0, 1.13 ERA) gives up three hits over eight innings to give the Angels their first win of the season, 4-2. Bill Melton (.111, 1 HR, 3 RBI) hits a three-run home run to provide the offense. Sal Bando (.200, 1 HR, 2 RBI) homers for the A's in the loss.

Twins leadoff hitter Dan Ford (.429, 2 HR, 5 RBI) scores four times on four hits - including a double and a three-run home run while Steve Braun (.417, 3 RBI) and Rod Carew (.500, 5 RBI) each drive in three runs as the Twins pound Texas, 11-5. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Pete Rose (.462, 4 RBI) delivers his third single of the game to score Johnny Bench from third base to tie the game at four. After Joe Morgan walks to load the bases, George Foster (.286, 2 HR, 6 RBI) wins it for the Reds as his seeing-eye single snakes through the left side of the infield and gives Cincinnati a three-game sweep of the Astros.

Torrez Derailes The Ryan Express
Oakland starter Mike Torrez (1-0) is not in a welcoming mood, keeping the California Angels to just three hits in a 5-0 shutout win and prohibiting Nolan Ryan (0-1, 1.13 ERA) from getting his first win since offseason arm surgery. Torrez had a few scary moments with runners on third with two outs on two separate occassions, but each time he managed to get out of it damage free - throwing just 101 pitches for the game.

"Campy (Oakland second baseman Bert Campaneris) told me before the game to just throw strikes and let them hit the ball - that the defense would take care of the rest. I didn't listen to him because, quite frankly, our defense scares me to death. Maybe next time I will."

Ryan is lights out for California, striking out 12 Athletics in eight innings, but an error by left fielder Dave Collins (his first) in the fifth inning allows four unearned runs and ruins what could have been a superb pitching duel. The only Oakland player to not strike out against Ryan was DH Billy Williams (.429), who hits a pair of doubles and scores one of the unearned runs.

Matlack's Arm, Harrelson's Legs Key Mets Win
Jon Matlock (0.90 ERA) is long gone by the time the bottom of the 15th inning came around. After throwing 10 innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five - he is in the clubhouse with his arm in ice when Bud Harrelson (.333) walks to open the bottom of the frame, steals second on the first pitch, then scores on back-to-back singles by Felix Milan (.364) and Lee Mazzilli (.333, 1 RBI) to give New York a 2-1 win. It is the second single of the game for Milan, to go with an earlier double. Expos starter Woodie Fryman (0.90) goes 10 innings as well, fanning seven and Gary Carter (.556, 2 HR, 2 RBI) scores the only Montreal run with a solo blast in the second - his second in as many games..

Freisleben Cruises Through Atlanta
San Diego gets their first win of the season behind the arm of Dan Freisleben (1-0, 1.00 ERA), who keeps the Braves bats quiet by allowing just five hits and one run in a complete game 4-1 victory. Tito Fuentes (.125, 1 RBI) hits an RBI double and Bob Davis (.400, 2 RBI) delivers a two-run single in the fourth inning to lead the Padres offense.

Other Games:
Detroit 2, Cleveland 3 - Dennis Eckersley (1-0, 2.57 ERA) strikes out 11 in seven innings and Duane Kuiper (.750) has a three-hit day to beat rookie Mark Fidrych (0-1, 2.25 ERA) - who throws a complet game in his first a major league start.

Boston 2, Baltimore 1 - Wayne Garland (0-1) fans seven, but two unearned runs costs him the win as Fred Lynn (.571, 1 RBI) triples and singles twice before leaving the game with an arm injury.

New York 12, Milwaukee 2 - New York scores 10 runs in the final three frames to blow open a 2-2 tie. Ed Figueroa (1-0, 2.00 ERA) gets the win, Chris Chambliss (.444) scores three runs on four hits and Mickey Rivers (.333, 3 RBI) drives in three in the win.

Minnesota 2, Texas 5 - Jim Umbarger (1-0, 1.08 ERA) allows two runs (one earned) and strikes out seven while Toby Harrah (.400, 1 HR, 1 RBI) homers, but Twins starter Dave Goltz (0-1) helps by walking eight.

Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 3 - Willie Stargell (.500, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the top of the ninth off of Phillies closer Tug McGraw (0-1, 1 BS) for the win. Pittsburgh's Richie Zisk (.750, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and Mike Schmidt (.333, 1 HR, 2 RBI) of the Phillies also homer. The home run ties Stargell with Ralph Kiner on the career home run list.

Messersmith Makes His Choice
After days of negotiating with various clubs, including Houston, Oakland and the Cubs, Andy Messersmith surprised few when he announced he is the newest member of the Los Angeles Dodgers - which rumor has it, was the only team to offer over $200,000 for his services. When asked whether money was a key factor is his decision, Messersmith attempted to dismiss those claims.

"I know there will be people saying I only went were the money was, but seriously, the Dodgers want to get back to the World Series. I want to help get them there. The fact that they offered to pay me a substantial amount to play for them had little to do with my decision. Of course, the house on the beach they promised me might have helped sway matters..."

The 30-year-old right-hander has won 39 games over the last two seasons and has never had an ERA above 3.01 at the end of the year in his eight year career. He joins a staff anchored by the returning Tommy John and includes former 19-game winner Don Sutton and southpaw Doug Rau.

In an inaugural season full of new horizons but very few wins, the Seattle Mariners were looking to change their losing atmosphere with an outstanding performance today versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

Dick Pole (7-8, 4.06 ERA) comes through, throwing a four hit complete game, striking out seven as the Mariners score a 4-1 victory over Milwaukee in front of just 6,132 at the Kingdome.

"It's been an up and down season for me so far, that is for sure." Pole said chuckling after the game. "I've won some, I've lost some, I've hit people, I've thrown wild pitches and I've balked - hell I even got suspended for two games. To be the guy this team depends on to pitch well every fifth day is important to me. Tonight was special - now we just have to keep the momentum going."

Dave Collins (.294, 4 HR, 31 RBI) scores Seattle's first run in the first inning after a leadoff double and an RBI single by Carlos Lopez (.240, 27 RBI, 12 SB), then gives the Mariners a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a solo home run off of Milwaukee starter Jerry Augustine (9-6, 4.34 ERA) - who throws all eight innings in the loss.

While backup catcher Ron Hodges (.281) has two of the four Milwaukee hits, it is a solo home run from Sixto Lezcano (.276, 10 HR, 40 RBI) that provides the only runs for the Brewers.

"Four hits." Lezcano said sitting at his locker. "Four (expletive) hits. Against Seattle no less. My grandmother could get four hits off of those guys."

Detroit Tigers (41-36, 18-20 away)	8	Mickey Rivers (.241, 7 HR, 37 RBI) has four RBI on the day, including a three-run home run in the first inning while George Zeber (.304, 32 RBI) collects three singles and a double to lead the Yankees a 12-8 victory. Willie Randolph (.298, 31 RBI) adds a double and two singles and Thurman Munson (.299, 39 RBI) drives in three as New York moves to within a game of the AL East lead. Tom Veryzer (.238) has three hits and Tito Fuentes (.302, 2 HR, 27 RBI) homers for the Tigers in the loss.

Hector Torres (.262) collects three singles for the Jays while three Toronto pitchers strike out 10 Texas hitters. Claudell Washington goes 0-for-4 and is hitting just .138 in his last seven games for the Rangers.

Richie Zisk (.260, 44 RBI) hits a solo home run for the Sox as they lose for the third time i four games.

Baltimore's Larry Harlow (.264, 31 RBI) and the Red Sox Bernie Carbo (.239, 33 RBI) each hit dramatic two-out, solo home runs in the ninth and tenth innings to keep the score tied in extras. Rick Dempsey (.222, 7 RBI) has three hits for Baltimore while Carl Yastrzemski (.308) has a three single day for the Sox - but Boston loses their fifth straight.

Dan Meyer (.259, 4 HR, 26 RBI) hits a double and a game-winning, two-run home run in the eighth inning as Seattle beats the Brewers, 5-3. Steve Braun (.278, 22 RBI) adds a double and two singles as the Mariners win the first two games of this three game series. Sixto Lezcano (.279, 11 HR, 41 RBI) homers for the second consecutive game for the Brew Crew, but they lose for the fourth time in five games.

Oakland (28-47, 10-25 away) at California (43-31, 21-18 home)
Led by great pitching from Jim Umbarger (4-8, 5.35 ERA), who gives up just six hits while striking out five and aggresive baserunning, the Athletics beat California, 7-0. Umbarger delivers his second complete game of the season and his sixth shutout of his career to lead Oakland to their fourth straight victory. The A's also use their feet, as they steal eight bases off of Angels catcher Ike Hampton with Billy North (25 SB) leading the way with four and Shane Mallory (7 SB) adding three more.

Jerry Koosman (6-8, 4.01 ERA) uses just 66 pitches through eight innings in a 3-1 New York victory over the Expos, allowing three hits and one run, but is taken out in the ninth for closer Skip Lockwood (14 SV, 1.78 ERA) to a round of boos from the fans. Mets 2B Leo Foster (.221) equals the hit output of the Expos with three singles of his own, while Gary Carter (.314, 9 HR, 40 RBI) scores the only Montreal runs with a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Pittsburgh (52-24, 26-13 away) at Philadelphia (41-33, 17-15 home) .
Philadelphia finally breaks through as they come from behind with four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Pirates, 6-4. Davey Johnson (.282) scores on a Grant Jackson (2-1, 2 BS, 2.30 ERA) balk, which is followed by a two-run single by Garry Maddox (.225, 28 RBI, 18 SB) to give the Phillies thier first win in seven games against Pittsburgh. Craig Robinson (.239, 1 HR, 11 RBI) hits a pinch-hit, solo home run - hist first in his major league career.

Chicago (34-40, 16-22 away) at St. Louis (37-38, 23-21 home)
St Louis starter Pete Falcone (3.72 ERA) has things well in hand, holding the Cubs to two hits and an unearned run through five innings before a one hour rain delay ends his day. The Cardinals still win, 2-1 as Chicago reliever Donnie Moore (0-2, 2.70 ERA) fails to record an out in the ninth inning, allowing three consecutive singles - including the game-winner to Bake McBride (.332, 27 RBI).

Atlanta (40-37, 16-19 away) at Houston (46-30, 25-16 home)
Houston's Denny Walling (.235, 5 RBI) hits a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh inning, then scores one pitch later when a pitch from Braves starter Buzz Capra (5-5, 5.68 ERA) sails past catcher Bill Pocoroba to give the Astros a 3-2 lead and win over Atlanta. Joaquin Andujar (10-6, 2.81 ERA) allows seven hits and two runs (one earned) over eight innings, winning his fourth straight and Joe Sambito (1.03 ERA) closes out the game for his league leading 20th save. The Braves have eight hits on the day - five of them doubles.

New York (28-53, 15-26 away) at Montreal (30-47, 17-23 home)
After doubling to begin the bottom of the 10th inning, Wayne Garrett (.277) scores two batters later on a single by Jerry White (.348, 1 RBI) to give the Expos a 6-5 win over New York. Larry Parrish (.249, 7 HR, 28 RBI) and Andre Dawson (.202, 7 HR, 27 RBI) each hit two-run home runs and Garrett delivers a three hit day for Montreal as they split the doubleheader. Dave Kingman (.234, 14 HR, 39 RBI) hits a three-run bomb en route to four RBI and John Sterns (.276, 29 RBI) hits a pair of doubles for the Mets in the loss.

Los Angeles (39-38, 19-24 away) at San Francisco (39-39, 19-16 home)
Los Angeles starter Doug Rau (10-6, 3.56 ERA) holds the Giants to four hits, but two doubles and four walks add up to three runs (two earned) and a 3-2 San Francisco win. Reggie Smith (.283) singles and triples while Glenn Burke (.355) hits a single and a pair of doubles for LA, but falls to a 1/2 game behind the Giants for fifth place in the NL West. Willie McCovey (.285, 49 RBI) hits two of San Francisco's four hits with doubles from Derrel Thomas (.260) and Jack Clark (.297) being the others.

Cincinnati (45-30, 19-14 away) at San Diego (29-51, 13-24 home)
Andre Thornton (.289, 9 HR, 31 RBI) of the Padres has three RBI, two of which come on his ninth home run of the year to give San Diego a 4-1 win over the Reds. Gene Richards (.286, 50 SB) steals three bases to give him a league leading 50 while starter Randy Jones (7-7, 3.46 ERA) allows 10 hits, but only one crosses the plate as the Padres win their sixth game in their last 10. George Foster (.253) has three hits - including a double - for Cincinnati in the loss.

LF Warren Cromartie (.286, 1 HR, 16 RBI) is expected to miss about 2 weeks with a concussion.
He is placed on the 15-day disabled list.
RF Sam Mejias (.284, 11 HR, 34 RBI - AAA) recalled from Triple A Denver.
Jerry White is hitting .348 in mostly pinch-hitting spots but will get his shot in LF for the next two weeks.

The performance of Carlos Gomez tonight was both unexpected and pleasantly surprising. The man did everything: strikeouts, wild pitches, balks - you name it, Gomez did it tonight. Thankfully the offense woke up for an inning as we completed the team cycle in the sixth inning. Carlos Canseco (.256, 14 RBI) doubled, Jesus Rivera (.233, 6 RBI) tripled and Charles Belcher (.364, 4 RBI) hits his first home run in Triple A. Luis Rosado (.286) hits three singles foe Ashville in the loss.
